Running a café, salon, gym, or clinic in a small town, you've got to remember your audience isn’t global, they’re local, busy, and scrolling between errands. So this year, keep it simple
1. Instagram Grid
Your posts should teach, show results, or make life easier.
Don’t post stock photos of cappuccinos just because everyone else does. Show why your coffee is worth driving for, or how your massage actually fixes sore backs.
Don't post 5 days a week if you're just saying the same boring stuff. Your audience will learn to ignore you (if they haven't already)
Pro tip: One clear takeaway per post. If someone scrolls away without knowing what you do or who you help, rethink it.
2. Instagram Stories
Stories = human, relatable, behind-the-scenes, low-pressure.
Show staff preparing a dish, setting up the gym, or checking in on a client.
Pro tip: Use polls or Q&As to engage locals: “Which wine special should we run this week?”
3. Video still rules (but only if it’s good)
Selfie iphone videos are out
Even 15-second tips, recipes, or mini tutorials need decent lighting, framing, and sound.
Pro tip: Invest in good content. Your audience notices effort.
4. Sorry, but you do have competition
There’s five of literally everything in a small town. Your advantage? Find the tiniest point of difference and lean into it.
Ask yourself: Is your location more convenient? Do you offer more options than the others? Do you have an extra something that makes you stand out? You should be able to explain what makes you different without hesitation.
Small-town businesses have an advantage: their audience can actually come to you. So you don't need to keep posting for likes. Post for action, trust, and clarity and suddenly your grid and stories aren’t just noise they’re the reason someone walks through your door.
Big love,
G
